PARISH
COUNCIL MEETING
The
Council meeting held on Wednesday 13th February was attended by all Parish
Councillors, the Clerk and one member of the public. The following are extracts
from the minutes that the council need to approve at the March meeting.
The
Clerk reported that he had been assured by

The
Chairman invited Mr Steve Relton, a local resident; to address the Council on
his views as to what steps could be taken to improve the landscaping within the
village. He stated that there was a need to treat the nettles as that would have
an immediate effect. The Council RESOLVED that the clerk would raise the matter
with
Recreation

The
Chairman informed the meeting that Mr Peter Ilbury had started his work on the
recreation ground to restrict the level of mole activity and that he had managed
to trap a number of moles. Unfortunately a number of traps had been sprung
inadvertently by local residents.

Village
Hall
The
Chairman informed the Council of a letter received from The Little Milton
Village Hall management committee in which it requested permission to extend the
village hall to accommodate a village shop and Post Office as well as to sub-let
the planned extension to an Independent Provident Society. The Council RESOLVED
to grant permission to Little Milton Village Hall Management Committee and the
Clerk will send the necessary letter.
The
Chairman explained that the survey conducted into the commitment to the extended
village hall and its use was widely supported by the village. However at the
appropriate time there was need to have that commitment endorsed. The meeting
planned by the IPS would provide a suitable platform for that to take place. As
the project gained momentum the Council RESOLVED to maintain close links with
all aspects of the project so that it was fully aware of the risks and
opportunities that the project had and were best placed to assess it before any
decision of financial support was made.
The
Chairman informed the meeting that the shop steering group had identified the
need to widen the entrance area to the car park to allow two cars to pass each
other. This would necessitate a change to the existing barrier arrangement. The
group had also identified the need to provide a pathway around the side of the
car park leading up to the hall for use by pedestrians. The Clerk requested that
a cost of the proposals should be obtained.
The
Parish Council will meet on Wednesday
12th March
2008 at 8.00 p.m. in The Pine Lodge Little Milton unless there is a need to
convene any planning or other meetings.

FROM THE RECTORY
FROM THE REGISTERS.
It is
with deep sadness that we record the death of Amelia Grace Louise Whitton at the
age of 2 years and 10 months at her home in Warren View. In her short life she
had given so much too so many, and engendered an enormous amount of love among
us. We hold in our prayers her
parents, Michelle and Kevin, and Josh and Cloë. Their courage and fortitude
have amazed and inspired us all. We cannot be thankful enough for them.
The large congregation in St. James’ on the 18th February was a true
measure of how highly we in Little Milton regard them all.
EASTER 2008.
This
year Easter is very early with Easter Day being on the 23rd March. Palm Sunday
is on the 16th March, and the usual monthly pattern of Services will
be followed.
On
Maundy Thursday the 20th, in the evening at 7.30 p.m. the Service of
Communion in St. Mary’s, we will be commemorating ‘The night that He was betrayed’.
On Good
Friday, there will be a devotional service, reflecting on the crucifixion, in
St. Mary’s at 11.00 a.m. This Service will last about 45 minutes.
On
Easter Day, we celebrate the Glorious Resurrection with
Sung Communion in St.James’, Little
Sung Communion in St. Peter’s, Great Haseley at 9.30 a.m.
Because
Easter this year falls within school term time, it will not be possible to hold
our usual Benefice Easter Craft Morning on Maundy Thursday, but at the last PCC
Meeting it was suggested that a special event for children (of all ages) be held
later on in the Summer.
I
realise that many people will have friends and family with them over the
holiday, and please do not hesitate, bring them with you to Church. We would
love to see you.
AN EVENING SERVICE
On
Sunday 30th March, we shall be having one of our occasional Evening
Services, beginning at 6.30 p.m. Please do make a note of this date, and we look
forward to seeing you.
FULLERS FIELD SERVICE.
Usually
this is held on the second Monday of each month at 6.00 p.m., in the Common
Room, in Fullers Field, Great Milton and this month falls on Monday 10th March.
All are welcome for this Service which lasts about 30 minutes.

JUST AFTER DAYBREAK JESUS STOOD ON THE BEACH, John
21 v 4.
Dawn at
sea in the
All this
is in my mind as I read John 21 as the evangelist writes on one of the Easter
appearances. The whole passage speaks of the newness and freshness of God’s
love, about hope and new beginnings, about the tears which come when pain is
shot through with joy, in other words God’s new creation.
Of
course, when Jesus was with them in the flesh, the disciples had glimpses of
this new order: the healing of the sick and possessed were all signs of the
Divine love at work, a love which willed to bring about all that was contrary to
the Divine purpose into a new wholeness. It would only be later that the true
significance of Good Friday with its message of pardon and peace, crucial and
integral parts of this new creation, would become clear.
Now
after the resurrection, Jesus was with his disciples again at dawn, and by his
very presence insisting that love is stronger than death, and that the God who
had created the world, and who had grieved over all that disfigured and
corrupted it, had in his Son, taken all the blackness onto himself, and had
broken through to the new creation the other side.
We are
disciples of Jesus; we are to be people of the Easter dawn. This means we must
look at things in a new way, with the light of the dawn on them. We are to see
new things, new possibilities, and new ways. In all things we are to see new
life, think new life, open our hearts and give new life, and this we do because
Jesus is risen, and his new creation has come into being.
encircling them, that there is a new creation and they are part of it. We are to tell them that they are loved and cherished and that no circumstance is beyond the redeeming
power
of God.
What we
are to tell, the Lord will teach us. What we are to be and to do, he will teach
us that too. Should we be in danger of stumbling, he will lift us.
We all
know that experience of when things look dark, and a friend who is content just
to sit and listen comes. With their warmth of love and acceptance, we feel
better for their having been. There is in such a friend a freshness of a certain
dawn, a hint of a Cross where love, joy, sorrow, pardon and peace flow mingled
down. Such people are agents of the dawn, of the new creation. They are working
with God renewing His creation.
This
Eastertide, may we in our prayers join our Lord of the shore, and then hearing
His commission to us, become what we should be, agents of his new creation.
THE
CHURCH FETE 2008.
We are
in the early stages of planning our next Church Fete; the date has been fixed as
Saturday 7th June at The Manor. Please make a note of the date in your diary, as
we really need your support whether helping or just coming along and enjoying
the day.
We would
really welcome any offers of help for the day or any bright new ideas that would
add to the fun of the day.
Now is a
great time to set aside toys that have been replaced at Christmas by more
exciting varieties, any bottles or unwanted gifts that may be gathering dust.
All these items will be put to great use on our stalls, we will let you know
nearer the time who to contact.

FROM LITTLE
Our fund
raising for our partner school in South Africa, Caesar Mlumbi, culminated in the
presentation of a cheque for £500 to Richard Grey, a representative of BEFSA, a
charity supporting schools in South Africa.
He gave a power point presentation of life in our partner school which
was of great interest to the children. Hopefully
the funds will help towards the provision of their new sick bay.
We have
had a visit from some less welcome visitors – the lead has been stripped from
the more accessible areas of our school roof!
So we now have scaffolding in place and the lead is being replaced with a
substitute material which has no resale value!
Our next
major project is a production of “Ocean Commotion” which will take place
just after the Easter weekend. Parents
and children will all be involved in making scenery and fish costumes, and we
will soon be adding new songs to our repertoire.

We plan to meet on Sunday 2nd March, when we intend continue undertake a hedge-laying course, by properly sorting out the hedge between the Allotment area & the field.
There
are still some Allotments available to rent, this is a good time of year to take

It has
come to light that people are walking on areas away from the designated

The next Quiz Night at the Village Hall will be on the 15th March. The

had before so it's not a tight limit - and there will be some tickets on
the door, but advance booking is recommended. The support for this event

POST
OFFICE-WE’RE STAYING OPEN!
Most of
you will know the great news that Post Office Counters have decided that Little
Milton Post Office will remain open, at least for now.
I believe what made the difference was our plans to move up to the
Village Hall site, and Annie’s superb efforts on our behalf but, we are not
yet out of the woods.
We are
still awaiting the result of grant applications from Wren and The Plunkett
Foundation before we can be confident that we can build the new facility, and
most of all, we need the support of the village in terms of volunteers to help
in the Shop and Coffee Shop.
The
viability of the whole facility is dependent on being able encourage enough
volunteers from the village in the shop to serve customers, stack shelves, serve
coffee and teas in the Coffee Shop, and clean. This is critical, at least while
the shop is growing, because in the short term we may not be able to afford more
than one full time member of staff. If you think you can spare an hour or two
during the week or at weekends, you could make a huge difference to the success
of this venture.

VIEW
FROM VIEWS
This
month is often known as “March fill dyke”, meaning that a wet March will
fill all the ground water fissures and water reservoirs for the coming growing
season. However, in a book I was given for Christmas, which is rather like a
diary giving the country’s weather history on a day by day basis, it states
that “March is the driest month of the year”. This book also thinks that Feb
should be reclassified as an early spring month. Certainly, once again, the
first green shoots of spring are showing and the birds have also got the
message, soon we shall be waking up to the dawn chorus.
It will
be no great loss if we were to have a dry period now, as the land is absolutely
sodden. There is one place on the farm where we have a blocked land drain. The
flooding that this has caused through the winter is inconceivable. The problem
we have here is roots getting into the drains. Then over a period of time the
water calcifies these roots forming what is virtually a rock plug in the drain.
It is nearly impossible to clear the blockage without actually digging up that
particular part of the drain and with the ground as wet as it is now it is
difficult to get near the problem either by hand digging or with a machine.
I would
like to put straight some of the many conflicting reports about bio-fuel that
are circulating at the moment. Firstly there are two types of bio-fuel, one is
made from vegetable oil, be it fresh or used, which is “esterified” (the
process that we carry out here see page 82 Country Life 21/2/08). The finished
product is bio-diesel which can be made out of any plant that produces oil, most
common being rape, sunflowers, linseed and all manner of pulses. Bio-diesel can
replace fossil fuel in your diesel engine in any quantity from 0 - 100%. The
next type of bio-fuel is ethanol which is a petrol replacement. Ethanol is made
from distilled grain, to produce an alcohol, not dissimilar to making Whisky.
Unlike bio-diesel this cannot be used as a 100% replacement for petrol
There is
a lot of talk about the destruction of the rain forests to make way for planting
palm oil for fuel. In fact palm oil is of little use in this country because at
temperatures below 10 deg it thickens and will not flow though a fuel system.
Then there is the blame being laid at the door of the bio-fuel industry for
causing the price of food to rise. This also is not true in this country. The
price of food is governed by supply and demand (a report of “Farming Today”
BBC Radio 4 said, also 21/3/08, there is only 9 weeks supply left in the world)
with the price of grain and oil seed being so high it is not viable to process
into bio-fuel. As I understand it most of the plants planned for producing these
fuels have now been mothballed, therefore not producing, or affecting the cost
of food.
The
story is slightly different in the

carbon footprint of bio-fuels is a little more difficult to equate. Arguments
can be made for and against, depending on production methods, raw material etc.
All I will say is that our bio-diesel is made from used cooking oil therefore
its carbon footprint must be about as low as it could be. The raw material has
already been grown and used. We are starting to see signs on public service
vehicles stating how low their carbon footprint is or what alternative fuel the
vehicles are running on. In most cases this is no more than any other commercial
vehicle is now having to do by law, as they all now have to comply with certain
emissions thresholds. Having said that, a local company with a large maintenance
contract with the County Council, are using our fuel, and saving the rate payers
money to boot!
To move
to the future very briefly, the next generation of bio-fuels is really exciting.
The extraction of fuel from algae is technology that I cannot pretend to
understand, but is not far round the corner. The stems of plants also hold great
potential. Makes sense when you think of it as this is where the strength of a
plant is, strength is energy, convert that energy into liquid and you have fuel.
Bio fuel is not restricted to liquids, “short rotation coppice” (src),
willow that is harvested every three years and miscanthus, a type of grass are
solid fuels and used by the power generating companies. This is something that
farmers were encouraged to get involved with in conjunction with Didcot Power
station, but has since gone rather pear shaped because promised Government
grants and commitment from Didcot itself did not materialise. Now those who did
start to grow src have to transport it to Aberthaw in S Wales while Didcot is
importing palm kernel (to the detriment of the rain forests) as its “green”
fuel from

NEIGHBOURS
CLUB
It was a somewhat sad group of fourteen members who gathered for our first
meeting of 2008. We held a minutes silence for Alma who sadly passed away on
Christmas morning. We made a collection in her memory and £40 will be sent to
NSPCC which was her favourite charity. We were very pleased to be allocated £1,500
from the Sheppard Trust this year which will be divided between Club funds and
the cost of the coaches for our outings. Annual subscriptions of £3 were
collected and officers were elected for the coming year. After some persuasion
Mrs Janet Earl agreed to be our Chairman with Mrs Margaret Webb as her deputy.
Our first outing this year was to the Ferryman at Bablockhythe where we
had a very nice lunch followed by an afternoon playing skittles. This is always
a very happy afternoon with a great deal of laughter.

THE GARDEN COMPETITION
To
revitalise the garden competition, and encourage more people to enter, we have
decided to incorporate more categories, but keep the areas smaller, so that it
is not necessary to have your whole garden looking wonderful, and entries can
just be a part or section of the garden.
Please
will you enter and have some fun, you might like to recommend a friend to us, or
encourage your friends who have a lovely part of their gardens to enter. This is
an informal competition, and we are not expecting RHS or Chelsea Standards.
There will be small prizes for each category, and the overall winner of the most
outstanding garden will be awarded the cup. This competition is open to member
and non members, and will be judged in the last week of June.
The
categories are
Vegetable
